I used to say, “I’m a musician, I guess.” I have never set a foot on stage at a concert (unless you count my voice lessons in high school), and my equipment is simply a microphone and GarageBand open on my laptop. The essence of being a musician was that you’d perform in front of others, whether that meant you were playing the cello, singing, or just banging some pots and pans together to make a sound.
